Crane Loading Platforms
Crane Loading Platforms known often as “outrigger decks” are essential to high rise construction. Moreso today than ever. They used to be the domain of concrete contractors. You put one in to pull out all of the shoring they have on each floor after it’s cured for say 30 days. Otherwise you would have to pull it out with a construction hoist as it got to that level and that would be a significant waste of money.
Today subs like mechanical contractors, windows (enclosures as a whole), and other contractors use them to bring in large packages of materials. The interesting thing is that many companies use small, low capacity platforms that are small and require fall arrest. It’s all technology from a decade or more ago.
Today we have decks that are 13’ wide. Our Retractables have an outboard reach of 17’. You can open the end gates if you have longer items to get in, but for the most part, that would be items over 30’ long. Half of the product can go in the building while it’s still on the crane. So the question becomes, how many things are over 30’ long and landing on a Crane Loading Platform? For all intents and purposes, you shouldn’t need to use fall arrest ever with our outrigger decks.
I see contractors with small outriggers renting decks to accommodate modern packages from enclosure contractors and mechanical contractors regularly. The costs to do this is often as much as owning a deck. So why not just upgrade the little one you have and stop with the fall arrest and rentals? It’s just a silly practice in all fairness. It’s a bit like driving a VW Beetle today because it’s paid for despite all of it’s short comings compared to modern cars. Nearly no one does that, so why do it when hundreds of dollars are on the line as a contractor?
